Title: Fire...
Post by: GraphicDisorder on May 31, 2018, 08:55:57 PM
So our building caught on fire today. Our renter had a fire on his side of our building. Bad deal. 5 fire trucks, his side total loss other than the structure. Lights melted on the ground, all his inventory burnt, his personal truck all plastic on it melted inside and out, glass broken from heat, insulation in most of his side melted and burnt. What a mess. Our side is separated by a block fire wall, which did its job, we took on wicked smoke but that's it, no water or fire on our side.

This wakes you up quick we were in the shop early working and noticed this all develop and that saved this building. If we had been gone it would be gone. The Renter was out on deliveries. He's claiming nothing he did would do this, but he's the only one with a key other than myself. Insurance and inspectors all over my shop all day.  We are still without power. We overnighted breakers that should have my side back with power tomorrow but all garments in our building are shot, probably 30-50k in garments in the mix right now.

I have had several printers reach out to us offering help. Can't thank those of you enough. This will be a rough go until things are sorted out but this is why we have insurance and I am just thankful we have not lost our whole building and nobody was hurt.

holy crap! In the end, material stuff will be replaced. It will be a headache, but hopefully everything works out in the end.

If we can help with printing, please let me know.

All too often we find out what insurances coverage's we "DO NOT HAVE" after an event such as this fire.

Talk with your individual insurance provider to review coverage's, especially regarding non owned property in your custody and control.

Holy cow, so sorry man.  That has to be such a headache.

Seriously I would offer to help, but I have no time as it is.

Keep us posted on how everything goes.

I have had this happen to me twice in newspaper plants. No fun at all. First time about 50 years ago, it was started by an employee that was let go. I was just a kid (family business) but it's something that you never forget. The 2nd time was a electrical problem on a brand new piece of equipment. I have very good insurance at my current screen shop.

Let me know if I can help with anything.

Thank you everyone and thank you for some of you reaching out personally, means a lot and I am not sure what I will need if anything but if we can't get running soon I may need some help getting my current work sorted.

Insurance wise I am covered, we require the renter to insure the space he uses and the potential damage he could do to the whole building and that policy is current and I can only assume will be the paying policy here. However my own insurance is already on the case and are already making all arrangements and moving forward as if they are paying, they will just chase down the other insurance company if fault is found on that end. I have insurance on blanks, equipment, building, lost wages, lost sales, etc. I think we are as in good a position there as we can be, at least that is what I am told. Even if we are not fully covered in some way we will personally cover it. It is what it is as they say. We didn't come this far.

Thank you all, humbled by some of you reaching out.

Your own insurance should cover the lost first......Then if the investigation finds "negligence" (they screwed up)  on the part of the "third party" (your tenant) they will "subrogate" (sue them) against them....Good luck.....

Wow, glad you all are good, but I know the pain, had workers putting a new roof on our building and it caught fire, and we all had to evacuate, standing outside watching the fire dept and praying.  Same here if we can be of any help to you all.

KEEP A JOURNAL!!  You'll be getting a lot of input from a lot of different people.  Some of them may forget or get over ruled on agreements you make.  Who, when, where topic of discussion - anything and everything pertinent.  My experience is that insurance adjusters were not our friends. Good Luck!!

Ya the two insurance companies are already on site and I’ve been in a argument with one. It’s not fun. But today I’m getting power as planned it seems.

Insurance is a pain in the a$$ to deal with, the laundry mat next door flooded our building twice, causing us to loss a few thousands dollars in already printed orders amongst other things in the shop, took a while but they finally paid for all the damage, but we still had to reorder and reprint Good luck to ya.

You only need to deal with your own insurance company.....Let your adjuster deal with the other adjuster.....

Of course but they were here together and the other guys insurance was trying to delay us getting power back and I let him know he doesn’t have that authority and he isn’t a big enough man to make that happen.  Needless to say I have power as of mid day yesterday. Air scrubbers are running and our warehouse fans are running and we begin cleaning Monday with the cleaning company.

Sorry to hear man but I'm glad everyone is okay. You're one of the most resilient printers out there and I have no doubt you guys come back stronger then ever. I'd offer to print anything you need, but I can't touch the quality you put out, but I'm sure with all the great printers on this board you will manage to keep your clients happy!

Cleaning crews have removed all carpet, ceiling tiles and such in our upstairs offices. My staff spent all day today cleaning our printing area and such. Embroidery and half of our art team worked all day here as normal. Over all decent for nearly losing the building just a few days ago.

Insurance has been fantastic. Can't say enough about them. Same with the fire department, fire marshal, and so on. Great people. Your situation can change in a second clearly. My eyes are open even more to this now.

We expect to be printing tomorrow and by Wednesday we should be back to full speed and likely will work over time to finish the work as fast as possible. As bad as it was I am thankful and humbled. Thank you all for support and nice comments public and private.

Did they pinpoint where the fire originated and what caused it?

Zip still. They are going as far as researching the lights back there, there was a bulb busted in one of them, im like duh there was a fire under it. But apparently they are looking into it. Even looking at coffee creamer, as apparently it is highly flammable and there are pallets of that back there. But both of those are a reach because there isn't a glaring reason.

Fire is fascinating.  I dated a girl a long time ago that worked on fire research.  She worked with this guy: http://www.firescientist.com/ (http://www.firescientist.com/)  He is the one who discovered "glazing" can occur even without the use of an accelerant.
Title: Re: Fire...

It's a mystery here so far which is the most unsettling part of it for us.
Title: Re: Fire...
Post by: royster13 on June 05, 2018, 09:26:39 AM
Researching the cause of a fire, especially when the fire has affected other premises and "lawsuits" might follow can be a painstaking time consuming process....It is not how the fire started that is relevant but whether or not there was some negligence involved....If it was an electrical fault it may just end at that and each insurer pays their own claims....But if you tenant did something by mistake that caused the fire then your insurer will go after his insurer....Good luck...

PS....Glad to hear your insurer is doing their job...

For sure, and so far no major finger pointing has taken place. I am sure its coming though. Either way I am covered, well covered in fact and worst case I am out a deductible and my insurance company has proceed to handle it as if it is going to be their baby as they will just subregate (spelling) if fault is found. My opinion is someone was in there, but thats just my opinion.

The renter had his brothers car here, which interestingly had a mattress and pillow init, and its been in our lot for a couple weeks (his side). Id love to know why, he claims he is a truck driver and hasn't been around. I am not sure that is true. I just know that car shows up and shortly after we have a fire.

The email is made up I am sure, but could go to a real email box, however I am sure whoever did it doesn't own that email.

Either way I have the IP and other data like device used, location and such.

For fun and games I submitted to the fire marshal and 2 fire inspectors and maybe some others. Some might be curious of any one that might want to start a fire here, this looks like someone that might want to right?

Play stupid games you might win a stupid prize.

I consider myself pretty good at being able to pick out writing styles going back to the wild west days on screen printing forums when so many guys were using multiple accounts and trying to get over on other members.  And I don't think the person who wrote that email has posted here and if they have they haven't posted much.  But I haven't been reading too much lately so it's entirely possible they are posting here and I just haven't seen it.  At first I thought whoever that was was someone with low IQ, then I read it again and noticed there were no misspelled words, not even the most common punctuation and/or grammatical errors that leads me to think (I really don't know why I thought this, intuition or a hunch I suppose) that a woman wrote that.  Smart people can make typos and errors regularly enough, but low IQ/dumb people ALWAYS do.

They are really angry about something, and they seem to be taking things very personal and are attacking in a manner that is personal.  Do you have any disgruntled current or former employees that you can see writing that and being anal about the spelling and grammar?

Must be a pretty shitty shop if someone has enough time and energy to email something like that.  I mean, Brandt isnt exactly Mr. Niceguy or whatever, but who honestly lets some bottom feeder pricing and pictures of fast cars get that far under their skin, lol.

Off topic, but did you ever sell your M-link.  I know I chimed in about being interested forever ago, and even if you did I would love to pick you brain about it.  We need to upgrade capacity on the DTG front pretty much immediately and its basically time to either buy a couple MlinkX's or a big boy Kornit...

I'm one of the easiest going guys in the world and Brandt and I don't see eye to eye on some things so take that into account, and I bet we are a lot more alike than we are different, and no matter how much someone has frustrated me or annoyed me I can't see myself sending an email like that.  There has only been 2 or 3 guys in the history of these screen printing forums that I honestly thought were not good people, or I guess that's a little harsh, they just lied about most everything they talked about and many people respected them and took their advice to heart.  They might not have been evil people, but the damage they could do with those types of lies can literally ruin someone's business, bankrupt them.  Even those people wouldn't have extracted a response from me like that.  That person is really a scumbag and I think there is potential for it to escalate to something bigger.  I hope not, but those are my final thoughts on it.

LOL. Someone is just projecting how they really feel about themselves. Some people just have chips on their shoulders for whatever reason. Its always crazy when you come across someone who perceived a slight years ago. They finally confront you and you have no idea what they're talking about because it happened a decade ago... LOL. Very infuriating for them in my experience. Some folks just let you live rent free on their head for years and carry crap around. Forgiveness / letting go is a powerful thing, but some just don't have the capacity. I wouldn't lose sleep about it.

Sold the M-link, just didn't fit our set up at this time. Out space dictated it to some level, which will now change after this fire as we will expand into that space so it might be on our radar some day again.

I would bet we are closer to alike as well, I think we are all just passionate about our businesses in different ways. So it would be unlikely we would all agree on everything because our perspectives are all different. I wouldn't write an email like that to anyone and only can think of one person who id even suggest would warrant that type of a email. But hey some people are bat sh!t crazy and do whatever they want.

We both know anyone that would resort to submitting an anonymous email would never man up in real life.

ALl thats left on my side is cleaning of warehouse ceiling and they are finishing some cleaning in the embroidery area today/tomorrow.

Same here actually, this fire wasn't from us or our operation. But it did affect us.  But literally we are 100% running since Tuesday. We lost 3 full days. That's it. We made up 1 already in that time already. By Monday or so we will be fully on or ahead of schedule.

Mike was my CCI rep at one time. Every time he called, our folks would always announce via intercom that I had a call from Mike Hunt. Great guy!

If you read the whole thread, you'll see that Brandt posted a nasty email, gloating about his fire,  from a rather mean-spirited fellow claiming to represent the membership here.

For the record, I wasnt trying to tie the real Mike Hunt (CCI) to whoever sent Brandt the nastygram. Its just a funny coincidence.

And yeah Daryl, its the same guy. Nice funny dude!
