Oil for oilers and pneumatics
« on: December 20, 2014, 06:28:47 PM »
Tech was in the shop last week and said the oil we were using (I think it's Vactra, we had bought it from a supplier as the correct oil) was incorrect for putting in our oiler/pneumatics on the presses.   I couldn't find 10w non-detergent oil anywhere in town so have to order some up.  I was wondering is any type of oil better than another here or will something like this be ideal?:

I would look for a non detergent air oil not motor. There may be some additives or lack of in the motor oil being used in an air system.

Coilhose punamatics makes a air oil and Mobil Almo 525. The 525 is a 15w and may be too heavy.

Personally I would just get it from M&R and you know it is for your machine. A quart will last a year.

We use the stuff you show above from Amazon. Works just fine.

We used something that came from Ingersoll Rand that was dark green in color and was marked Air Tool Oil in our Javelin.

New press has no oiler :)

i will tell you the Almo stuff is junk.  Our AC tech said to just recycle it.  I will say we've rebuilt way less pumps since switching.  we used to do one a year.  We've done one in 4, and that was because the compressor shims rotted and the oil all slid to the front and wore the back bearings.

We use the stuff from Northern...it's great....and pretty reasonable.

Hahahaha, um well, I guess not such a funny thing for us here, but I can see how some would laugh about this... When we had our anatol installed years ago, the tech just said to buy/use "marine" oil. After reading this I'm thinking that is something I should probably get to changing out ASAP, yes?  :-[

I think some of you guys are talking about 2 different things.

Oil for the air compressor pump

vs.

Oil for the Oiler that's on the side of the press.

they are absolutely 2 different oils, and if you intermix them you will have problems.

Our old piston air compressor used straight SAE-30 NON Detergent oil.  (I seem to remember that some places may call it gear oil as well?)

Our old press, as well as some of my old air tools in my wood shop, use Pneumatic oil which is the same as is used in the auto-oiler on the side of the press.

Compressors we have always used Mobil Raras 427, never had an oil related failure.

Air oil like I said a good oil made for it. Keep in mind oils made for air systems are resistant to emulsification where others may just absorb water.

On the other side you just spent $50k maybe $100k on a machine. If the mfg will sell you their OEM oil why not use it. What's it cost $20 for a quart that will last a few years, cheap insurance and no guess work.

Sorry, I got my oils mixed up.

We use Mobil Almo oil for tools and oilers...works great.

The Rarus stuff is what our compressor tech said to steer clear of and since then we've seen far fewer problems from our compressor.  That being said, we have an older style pump and frankly I don't think the design is that great and is prone to failure.

Correct,  taking about oil for the oiler here.  In our compressor we use special oem synthetic stuff.

Jvanick,  what press do you have that does not have a lubricator on the fr ?

2014 Sportsman -- no oiler, and I was told that it does not require it by the tech that installed it.

on our rotary compressor, we have to use some kind of special oem stuff too... (Ultracool or something like that)... only have to change it every 2000 hours tho... so we have a long time before that needs to be done.
