Title: New Press - Coming soon!
Post by: GraphicDisorder on January 31, 2014, 02:04:42 PM
We needed more colors and heck some more features never hurt anyone either.  So we pulled the trigger on a Challenger 3D today.  12/14 Station.  Shouldn't be too long as this machine is already built.  In fact its the World Record Machine.  Ill post pictures when it hit's our floor and along the way.  Can't wait, super excited and thanks to Rich for all he has done for our shop.

You'd be OCD in here, we are so sloppy with our processes and such.  LOL  Any of you are welcome here at any time.  It's not a lot to see, but for what we are we are doing pretty good.

M&R will have it to sell.  We traded it in.   Cream puff of a machine too.  Honestly you could wipe this machine down and not know it wasn't brand new.

Ya right, my fat ass would fall over.  We will need a bigger dryer before we can run that fast anyway.  Boomerang is saturated well before that.

geez!!..you knocked it out!....let me ask you...the screens go up and down...i didnt know M&R presses had that....all ive ever seen were the pallets dropping, then rotate then raise. Also...seems louder witht he screens going up and down as compared to the pallets going up and down.

Crank up the heat and let it eat! That's how I roll.........Our mini sprint is badass, that is no joke. But in all reality we never run jobs like this unless they are getting a sleeve print or another print where that shirt gets cured twice. We hardly run our stuff fast like this as 90% of the time I have 1 press op per auto unless we are under deadlines. A new dryer will be one of the next investments I make as there are plenty of times where I'm maxing out the dryer but the presses are no where near max speed.

Mark, the ch3 presses, along with the alpha 8 oval and the soon to be released GT3 all have the screens drop to the pallets. For my shop this type of indexing system was magical to say the least. We setup multiple jobs on press at one time and never have to worry about ink transfer. A couple months back, we had an order of 8 different 1 color designs with 288 pcs each. We setup all 8 screens on different heads and printed the entire order of 2,000+ shirts over 8 different designs in under 3 hours. We were able to leave all the screens on the press w/ ink on them, going from 1 design to the next.  I will be replacing my diamondback with a new press once I can save enough $$$ as the indexing system is golden in my book. Plus the control of off contact is amazing. I just ran a crap load of these foam mats for captain morgan and I was able to print the mats @ 60 doz/hr on our ch3 press. This was due to the fact I could bring the off contact up high enough and have the mats clear the screens. All in all the indexing system on ch3 imo is un matched. Considering how it can self calibrate itself for perfect harmonic registration is a feature I think most people don't even realize exists with the ch3 and that alone is incredible.

Brandt, no excuses on how big your ass is....you got the world record press. We better see that thing running 120 doz/hr or I'm coming to steal it. Just sayin LOL

I doubt we ever print anything remotely close to as fast as him.  But ya it will be nice to know that basically this press will run faster than we can.

get a Tacana, its the best flash and its out of your way.  I got the quick klamp and I built 16 squeegees in about 20 mins.  Would have taken hours the old way.  You are gonna love it.

we have two Tacana flashes - our press operators choose them over the Cayenne everyday.  they say that the cayenne cools down too fast.

On M&R's recommendation the second flash is a Chilli.  20x24 (we print pretty big at times).

Chili is the one they recommend, but the Tacana is the bees knees!  No stand, nothing to get dirty or clean around.  It costs more, but SOOOOOO worth it.  Thank me later, just come by here and see for yourself.  Another grand or so, but in the long run that's nothing, its that much better.

Hard to come up with a single negative thing to say. I bleed blue. CIIID (and others), Tacana D (and others) , Kwik Clamp, Sprint 2000 (x2) . What more could a guy ask for. Maybe an STE I guess. Tried and true, Bleeding Blue. Through and through.

Literally take your old dozen per hour number and add another 20-25 dozen to that.  That's how much faster you will be printing, but not working any harder.

That's the exact flash we might end up needing to buy for our second flash on the 12/14 CH3 we bought a couple months ago.  Got in a 22x24 Cayenne D already and wired and tested it just need to find a second flash soon.

Can't install / run the thing though until our energy company finally gets in touch with our electricians to up the power to the building though so you will probably be running before us.

Congrats...the digital part really looks worth it.

We have a 18x22 Cayenne D as a main flash, so the Chilli is just a second flash for us as well. We also still have a Vastex 18x24 that honestly keeps up pretty good once its warmed up.  I hope to be running next week.  We are about to hit our busy time!

Yeah, the P-tex machines are doing awesome, sarcastic smiley here.  It's way worse than I imagined it would be but I suppose we shouldn't derail this great thread with the failtex issues.

I hope that's a belt.

I am sure ill be asking, we already are excited to see its got a 2 inch longer stroke than ours does now.  I can just tell by looking at parts of this machine its super well built.  The indexr is huge.

the indexing system on that thing compared to what you are used too, is LIGHT YEARS ahead.  Its that awesome.  Takes some getting used to, like 1 day and then you will be rocking.  Wait til you start using the "Go To" feature, I LOVE THAT, super smart function that I would hate to go without now that I use it everyday.

Is that where you can press a button on head 1 and then on head 7 and it will bring you the pallet?
Title: Re: New Press - Coming soon!

Yes, not exactly like that, but yes!
Title: Re: New Press - Coming soon!
Post by: TCT on March 03, 2014, 07:34:41 PM
Yes, not exactly like that, but yes!

Ya, I did a piss poor job explaining that.
It brings you the pallet from any given head directly to another head, is that kind of better?

Either way that is what ours does as a "Go to" and it is a great feature. So if I am closer with that, it is convenient!

Adjust EVERY single parameter from control panel.  No more prox switches, no running around the press to speed or slow down squeegee or flood bar, no more manually adjusting stroke length, no more pressure regulator knobs.  Literally EVERYTHING from control panel, or it can all be done at the head, your choice.  If your doing multi strokes you can even tell it different pressure settings for every stroke.  Once you save your tri-loc position, just press goto tri-loc and it will automatically find it and return it to control panel. (use that all day).  Screen take down is a little more tricky since the pallets don't go up or down, but theres a feature for that too!  Its called squeegee/flood park.  Do a half index and press the park function and BAM, easy as pie!  There is a TON more but that's off the top of my head.

Unless Brandt hires an unloader, a shirt opener person for the loader and an additional person at the end of the dryer, and perhaps buys a new dryer, that press won't ever reach it's top speed.  I'd be happy just running it 100dz/hr and not have to hire another employee.

I'd imagine it's as much about knowing you'll rarely if ever be held back by the limitations of your equipment as anything.  Anyone who has ever had stacks of shirts to be printed only to be held back by how fast your press can do whatever it needs would have to agree.  when you are on a roll loading, that half second on every shirt that you could be gaining seems like an eternity when you have to sit and watch the press finish printing and indexing before you can sling that next shirt on.  Not ever having to be held back by the press, thats worth it right there.

For where the dryer made sense to go at the time clockwise makes most sense in our current spot.  But this press will run either direction ;)

A feature I like about the C3D is the programable air pressure. Cool to say, on certain artsy type designs, where you may do a double stroke, or if you have to revolve, first stroke is at 1 pressure setting, then say the second stroke, or say the same color on a second rev can be programed to have a lower pressure. Gives you control without walking around the machine to do some of those settings. Not everyone would even use that function, but if I had it, I would  ;D

Brandt, looks awesome in there! I'll be needing to plan a trip out there to see that press kicking out the jams. I think we are going to try and replace our dback this year with a 3d so I'd like to play around with one if you don't mind. Our ch3 is so badass that I can only imagine how great the 3d is. Just today on our ch3 we printed over 4,000 shirts across 8 different PO's with 44 screens total. We have a job on press right now that we are double stroking and it's running 61 doz/hr double stroking! Let me know when would be a good time to make a day trip out your way, I've got some stuff to bring your way for you to test as well......

Yeah the speed you can double print is such an increase for production its crazy, such a nice thing if you need it. The indexing system took me a week or two getting used to but now that I've run the ch3 for 6 or so months I can't get another press like it to replace my dback fast enough. It wont take long for you guys to much prefer it. One thing is for sure though I know my shop is smaller then yours I guarantee that lol... I just started a loft project that is becoming a dedicated ink room, place to use the roller master/build squeeges/etc as im out of room on the floor but have high enough ceilings thankfully. Early next month though ill be replacing my cts with a new m&r I image ste and adding a uni kote auto coater sowe will be a 100% m&r equiped shop at that point. Anyone on the forum here is more then welcome to come out and see what we use but be forewarned its tiny here lol...

First impressions so far:

1. Did a job yesterday that we have printed many times before.  It used to take us 1.5hrs on the sportsman.  Took about 35-40 minutes on the new press and I would describe it as "casual" printing.
2. Fast, I think it was hitting 208dz a hour with heads on at one point, of course we cant print that fast though.  The press is very smooth and it's got a bunch of cool features and we are still figuring out new ones.
3. Go to function is nice.  You can be at the main control panel and send a pallet where ever you like with about 2 button hits.
4. You can have it memorize the Tri-lock pallet.  So you can just click it at any time and it brings it to you.  pretty nice at the end of the job just hit the button and load the tri lock up.
5. Control nearly everything at the head or at the main control panel.
6. Copy/head paste/head feature is nice.  So you can set your stroke/speed/pressure on 1 head and then "copy" and "paste" to any or even all heads with like 2-3 clicks.  Nice not to have to go to each head and set that..
7. Amazing how accurate the servo motors are on this press, you tell it to stop at 1 inch and 19 inches and it does exactly that regardless of speed of print/flood.  The Sportsman had some "coast" in the head so if you were running hard you had to compensate with the prox sensors.  None of that to worry about on this beast.
8. Flash plug at each head, that is nice no chasing cables.
9. I love that it doesn't table up and down.... this makes loading and unloading faster.
10. Preheat is nice.  It has a temp sensor for each pallet.... so you can set a temp you'd like the pallets, you click 1 button and put it in auto mode and the heads turn off and index/flash the pallets on its own and the press beeps at you when the pallets are ready.

I'm seeing people say "nearly" every function from the main panel can be done. Which ones cannot? And the same question for the controls at the heads?

From the panel you can print, index, print size, print speed, print pressure (per stroke), etc.  So far can't think of one thing you can't do from it but there might be something.  Just covered my ass by saying that.  LOL

hahahhahahahahaah that's awesome!!

Hey Brandt, after you and Shelly run several jobs, let us know how much "physical", difference you feel on your bodies loading, unloading setups as well as the loading unloading of shirts vs the Sporty.

By the end of the day we will be at 9 jobs on it, so far its less work as the table is higher than the Sportsman is.  We also got the press a bit closer to the dryer than the Sportsman as well so that helps.

SO FAR (obviously its all still new to me so i havent go it down pat yet) but i FEEL like i setup for 19 hours and print for 30 minutes total LOL probably because every portion of the setup process is different than the Sportsman and printing is the same except i dont have to hunker down to load and unload a shirt...I'll get it down to a science soon though!  that is amazing the difference that makes physically though when the pallets arent going up and down...you can print faster and it doesnt even feel like it. Also my ears appreciate the decline in PSSSSH PSSSSSH PSSSSH PSSSSH noises.

As the loader/unloader i was doing 32dozen an hour i think which is about what i was doing before but it didn't feel anywhere near rushed like on the sportsman.  It was pretty casual pace.  The micro's on my sportsman had "slack" i guess youd call it... from going one way, to the other way, you could feel it catch so you'd know when it was actually starting to micro in...this one is just full on goodness so i have to get used to that.  It's hard to get used to something being so nice :D

3 more jobs today, maybe ill have time to weigh in a little more later...

Thanks for the info Shelly, my wife and the girls here are going to want to read this. Especially the double stroke speed and the ease you are feeling loading unloading.

Just an FYI. If this is a job that repeats occasionally use the save feature and next time you run it recall the job and it will set 95% of the parameters you used to run it the first time.

Saw that, didn't mess with that yet.  But we do have some jobs that we'd like to repeat at times and I bet we will try that out.

Figured out the park heads function a few ago.  That's pretty nice, brings the heads forward so you can easily change out the sq/fl bars.  It also sucks the flood bar up so it doesn't flood on its way forward.

when these double stroke, does the flood bar chop down to the table being the screen frame is already down, or does the whole screen just lift back up to the print carriage for the additional flood?

You can set it to multiprint in the down position which means the second print it skips the flood OR it will bring the screens back up and flood then print.   It all happens fast enough either way.

so in this menu, you select the print station that you want, say pallet 1 that might have the trilock pallet on, and the table will go to said print head vs holding the index knob till you get where you want to be? Pretty cool indeed

this is awesome... would be especially nice when you have stubborn inks that won't clear on the first stroke.

I also especially like the fact that you can adjust the squeegee pressure right from control station.

Next up will be a select box per station that you select what ink type and batch is on the screen, and it returns the settings you used the last time with that ink.  I could see that saving a lot of time during setup, especially for your third-shift more junior press ops.

You can save jobs, which I suspect you could save jobs with your most common configuration and use it as a jumping off point.

Ryan, how does your press multi stroke. Print, flood and print while screen is down, or does the screen lift back up for the next flood.
Title: Re: New Press - Coming soon!
Post by: Ryan on March 08, 2014, 05:09:35 PM
Actually I can do it both ways. If its setup for standard print ( either plastisol or water base) print-lift-flood-print. I find have a setting though that will leave the head in the down position and it will print-flood-print in the down position but you need to have your flood pressure right and use a little more off contact.  If I know that I am going to have to double stroke, I set it up this way but only with plastisol

One thing that would be cool (maybe im not sure how to operate it yet though LOL) is if you could COPY a "row" of details, and not the whole column....since i copy and paste the info from head one, to all the others (to do the print stroke area) it takes the pressures with it and generally i have a higher pressure on my UB screen and so if i could just copy the print size 'row' instead of the whole head that would be nice.

NOTE: this is like having a Ferrari and saying you know what could be cool...if this Ferrari could turn into a helicopter. lol

I was thinking more along the lines of having nearly the whole shop process automated.

when you get to the point of having a CH3, you probably already have a CTS setup as well...

you could nearly have something like:

1. create job in job management software
2. generate screens on the CTS..
3. [manual rinseout and drying]
4. Load the job on the press (load screens + load job specs from the job management software)
-- sets the print characteristics based on the ink/squeegee/etc...
-- press starts a counter to track setup time.
4. integration to dryer based on previous runs of shirt color and ink type/color???
5. test print.
6. start production, keeping track of number of indexes, print speed, etc.
7. end of production.
8. keep track of clean up time.

-- add in some scales to determine ink used/etc, you could know down to the fractions of a penny what it's costing to do a print run with real #'s, even for small jobs.

with that level of automation, you could really 'blackbelt/6-sigma' your operation to the point of having REAL numbers every step of the way per job...

not sure if it would really save you a ton of money, or if it would be worth it, but with everything going computerized and networked, it's certainly not that far off of an idea long term.

[PS.  I claim royalties and copyright on the FULLY automated/fully instrumented shop concept. -- patent pending]

Pretty sure M&R has automated the entire screen making process from imaging to exposure/rinseout reclaim, coating etc. Also Wilflex and others have done the same with ink formulation and mixing.

The CHIIID is full of features that I just haven't either seen on other presses or others aren't talking about and I haven't even figured out all the features on this thing.

NOTE: this is like having a Ferrari and saying you know what could be cool...if this Ferrari could turn into a helicopter. lol

Right? Most of us are like, "wait... you can actually copy and paste SETTINGS?"

Although what would be extra cool... export to Excel and be able to edit/save jobs from a desktop...
then it's extra cool. You can save to a flash drive or a PC.

That is correct Tony. We now have a U.V. Free room that will be in 5 shows this year showing all the above being done live during the show.

Since we have a booth at Surf which has "partnered up" with ISS I'll stop by in October. Will Orlando be one of them?

I knew that the whole screen making process has been automated, I was more thinking about integrating all the different automated processes into a single 'shop management' application.  Ala ERP for Screen Printers :)

basically, push a button/scan a barcode/etc at each step of the way...  heck if you got really cool, you could use RFID tags on the screens themselves...

I seem to remember somebody telling me a while back that they had a screen log that showed what inks, how many prints and how many reclaims were done on a particular screen by serial number.

to me more profit comes from taking variables out of the equation... you need LOTS of data to do that.

You certainly do. On occaision, a pitfall can be spending too much time collecting and analyzing data vs actual production. One can inhibit or get in the way of the other. Many large operations perform data collection for a set period of time and then draw conclusions as to cost asssociation and then move on.
Interesting note: at Giant Merchandising one could log on from home and track production on the night shift (per auto). Whats interesting about this is it was back in early nineties. I believe M&R discontinued the feature due to lack of popularity however it may be back.

It is back in a different format. The SGAI show in Vegas every machine in the booth including I Image ste and folding lines will be hooked up to it.

Rich: are you going to have all that at NBM Indy too?   Or maybe a demo center set up at one of your shops here in IL?  would love to check it out.

We have it all here in our Niles factory with people coming in for demonstrations constantly. The room is scheduled for Printwear Indy.

Shelly is certainly printing faster on this CH3D than that sporty.  She just did 100 shirts alone in 14 minutes.  Not bad for day 5 on this press.

This thing is amazing!  I accidently put screens in the wrong sequence today and i figured might as well just run it in revolver because by the time i realigned them it would be the same time...wow--revolver is certainly the bees knees LOL...i did 100 shirts in 28 minutes...18 minutes for non-revolver (one person).  144 shirts revolver, single manned (wo-manned) on the sportsman took about 1:15ish...

I dont know if those are good times for you guys but for me, its a huge improvement.  Basically im kicking butt with this thing!!!  I LOVE IT!
